Electrical tests on materials investigate their ability to store charge (capacitance) and transfer charge (conductance). Analyzing these parameters can provide valuable information in terms of a material's physical and chemical properties including: Impedance, porosity, tan delta, molecular relaxation, grain boundaries, phase changes, permittivity and modulus, along with many other parameters.
Dielectric analysis is a powerful non-destructive tool for characterising materials; it can provide accurate, repeatable results unavailable by other electrical means. The electrical properties of a material are unique and can be discovered by utilizing the frequency dependence of its constituent components. In addition the study of frequency related phenomena as a function of applied bias or temperature is often essential in the performance testing of materials.
Instrument requirements for useful analysis demand extremely accurate measurement of magnitude and phase, along with reference components and normalization routines to minimize the effects of stray cell and lead capacitances. The Solartron 1260A Frequency Response Analyzer is renowned for its accurate measurement of phase and its wide impedance range, but the development of modern high impedance, low loss materials has meant that further advances in measurement technology have been required. Solartron has specifically designed the 1296A Dielectric Interface to extend the measurement capabilities of impedance analyzers for the materials test market. The introduction of this dielectric test system now allows the user to investigate the frequency response of a material over an extended impedance range (up to 10^14 ohms), and under varying experimental conditions of AC amplitude control, DC bias to 1kV AC or DC, and temperature.

1296A Dielectric Interface
Analyzing low conductivity, low loss materials stretches the capabilities of even the best frequency response analyzers (FRAs). Used alone, they lack the sensitivity required for accurate measurements, especially at low frequencies. When used in conjunction with one of our FRAs, the 1296A Dielectric Interface overcomes these issues allowing fast, accurate impedance measurements from 100ohm to 100Tohm with 1 in 65,000,000 resolution. |
